Hades is a rouge-like action role-playing video game first released for early access in December 2018 by Supergiant Games. It was released for Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Nintendo Switch on September 17, 2020.
The player controls Zagreus, the son of Hades and Persephone. Zagreus has never met Persephone and was raised thinking Nyx, Night Incarnate, was his mother. Hades has kept Zagreus' existence a secret from the other Gods on Olympus. With Nyx's help Zagreus is able to make contact with the other Gods and they offer to help Zagreus escape the Underworld.
The main gameplay is created by The Underworld's ever changing maze of rooms that Zagreus and the player must navigate through. Most rouge-likes have changing rooms or stages that the player goes through, but this adds an inworld reason for the chambers being different each run.
The game itself is very fun to play, with a whole cast of interesting characters and story it is easy to play over and over. Like other rouge-like games there are ways to level up Zagreus so you don't feel like you're stuck in a rut. Each run is different, with a large library of voice lines ensuring the characters never get boring. All of the dialog is wonderfully acted by extremely talented voice actors and the music is beautifully composed so it's not a bore to listen to either.
Hades was received positively all around earning 24 nominations across four different award shows. The game won two Golden Joysticks as 'Best Indie Game' and 'Critic's Choice'. Also pulling in two Game Awards in 2020 for 'Best Indie' and 'Best Action'. The GLAAD Media Awards and the 24th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards are still to come so Hades might win more.
I personally love this game. It is easy to pick up and play a few runs or play for hours at a time. The levels are beautifully designed and the characters are easy to fall in love with. I can easily see why it is loved by many. If you want to see game play you can watch gwenbeshort stream it on the Ky's Korner YouTube channel or go to my personal Twitch were I stream it on Sundays.
